Finally it is a fact: despite legal uncertainty (the “constitutional” Treaty of Lisbon between the EU countries has not come yet into effect), the European Union held its parliamentary elections in June and is now preparing for the autumn reappointment of the higher government of the “united Europe”.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation takes active part in international relations in the area of ecology and environmental management.

Energy is one of the key areas in which the European Union and Russia are important strategic partners.

Last winter’s gas crisis has deeply affected a number of European countries. It has once again shown the vulnerability of the EU to external energy shocks.

Due to their political, economic, social and cultural potentials Russia and the European Union are major geopolitical entities on the European continent. Although the European Union was established only fifty years ago, the interaction between its member countries and Russia had taken shape for centuries.

I would like to add my words of welcome to the readers of this website, and to wish the European Club all the very best of success in this new venture.

Fifteen years have passed since the day when the Constitution of post-Soviet Russia was adopted. This Constitution provided legal basis for a new Russian Parliament that was elected in 1994 the fifteenth anniversary of which we shall mark in 2009.

Relations between Russia and the European Union have appeared to become most sensitive to the August crisis caused by Georgia’s aggression. Firstly, because they are really important for Russia which has never made secret of this fact.

The past year has been a real challenge for all of us who deal with EU-Russia relations in our daily work. The August events in Georgia had an immediate impact on both the way Russia is perceived in the European Union and upon the image of the EU among ordinary Russians.
